April 2003

In the south west corner of the house we excavated and started to build a cool-store room.  John leveled the area

underneath the house, and installed a cement floor. In the center of the floor, he left a large hole. This is intended for

a cool ventilation shaft, that could  be run into a pantry in the kitchen  at a later date. While completing these excavations ,

we also installed a run off pipe from the south tank, down through the garden bed on the south fence, to a small tire pond.

Around the tire pond I placed a rockery, and planted a native daisy, some grasses and a rosemary hedge (photo 3)

In April we planted our winter crop and placed a rock border around the edge of the raised bed on the south side

of the back yard. The south fence and south side raised beds are in the ideal position for our winter crops.

During our first year we planted broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, silver beet, lettuce,

broad beans, peas, carrots, parsnips, onions, leeks and garlic.
